"Spaceships"

Starship Childrren's Hospital is situated in Auckland.

Currently there are some living issues for parents who are not aucklanders but have to take care of their sick children in Starship Hospital. Several families have to crowed in one open type house with no privacy and inconvenice of traffic.

Therefore for my next scale, I am going to design a "spaceship" - a temporary living space for non aucklander parents.

I have taken my caravan into developments, and turns into the "spaceship" above. It keeps the caravan shape in the centre, but with four tents stretch out at each corner.
Above image is the plan of the "spaceship", the black colour is the public space, which consist living room, kitchen, washing rooms, and bathrooms. The red colour ( 4 tents stretched out at each corner) are the private spaces, each family live in each tent, they enter the public space through their own private space.

With each rod turning 90 degrees instead of being straight, the over all shape of the caravan looks much like a spaceship, which can refer back to Buckminster Fuller's "spaceship earth" idea.

Joint

This is the joint that holds each rod into 90 degree, and withstand the compresstion force when the rods connect with rubber bands.

Initial idea for caravan

The tensegrity model I did before was jointed with six rods with the same length. For the over all shape of my caravan, I decided to keep the consistancy with my jewellerybox, but with some developments.
The two images above showed the initial shape of my caravan. I have extened the length of the two rods at the top and bottom, which changed the shape a little bit, it's no longer a ball shape like the previous model.
Also I have decided to change each rod into 90 degrees angle instead of being straight, so that the internal space of the caravan will much bigger.
